<p>During a study conducted on the helminth fauna of fishes in the middle Munim River Basin, Maranhão State, northeastern Brazil, a new species of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Sciadicleithrum">Sciadicleithrum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Sciadicleithrum">S.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="anapurusensis">anapurusensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>sp. nov., is reported from the gills of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Saxatilia">Saxatilia</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="brasiliensis">brasiliensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (Bloch, 1792), a cichlid endemic to the Northeast region of Brazil. In addition, a known species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Sciadicleithrum">Sciadicleithrum</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="araguariensis">araguariensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Paschoal, Scholz, Tavares-Dias &amp; Luque, 2016, was recovered from the same host and is redescribed here, providing new morphological and biogeographical data. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Sciadicleithrum">Sciadicleithrum</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="anapurusensis">anapurusensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>sp. nov. differs from all congeneric species in the general morphology of sclerotized structures (anchors, bars, vagina, accessory piece, and the number of MCO rings), being mainly characterized by the bifurcated accessory piece with unequal branches at the distal portion, with a subterminal thin projection and a hook-shaped terminal end. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of carrying out comparable surveys on different host species in order to increase the knowledge on monopisthocotylan parasites of fishes in this area. Furthermore, the finding of two congeneric species in the same host species reinforces the host specificity of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Sciadicleithrum">Sciadicleithrum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species to cichlid hosts.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>Brazil has a significant richness of fish species and plays a fundamental role in discussions about the freshwater ecosystem, as well as its biodiversity and conservation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Azevedo-Santos et al. 2021</xref>). Nevertheless, like the rest of the planet, due to the exponential increase in anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems and the high extinction rates of species and populations, leading to a rapid loss of biodiversity, we are facing a serious global phenomenon, known as the “Biodiversity Crisis”, which is rapidly leading our planet towards a mass extinction (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Savage 1995</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Brooks et al. 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">Singh 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Brook et al. 2006</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Pimm et al. 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Ceballos et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hogue and Breon 2022</xref>).</p>
<p>This global crisis is more serious in freshwater ecosystems, which are more vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts and have higher rates of species and population extinctions, as these freshwater ecosystems are being altered, degraded, or destroyed more quickly and sharply, a phenomenon called the “Freshwater Biodiversity Crisis” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Darwall et al. 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Harrison et al. 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Reid et al. 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Albert et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Tickner et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Ottoni et al. 2023</xref>). Therefore, the mitigation of the effects of human actions on freshwater ecosystems and their conservation needs to be a priority (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Albert et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Tickner et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Ottoni et al. 2023</xref>). Brazil is facing all the problems and scenarios mentioned above, including the accelerated rate of degradation, fragmentation, and loss of freshwater ecosystems, and consequently, of the related biodiversity (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Pereira-Júnior and Pereira 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Azevedo-Santos et al. 2023</xref>).</p>
<p>The <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Cichlidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> comprises the greatest species richness among families of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Cichliformes</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, currently comprising 1762 valid species, among which 564 are included within <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily">Cichlinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Fricke et al. 2025a</xref>), a subfamily that naturally occurs exclusively in the Neotropical region (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">Smith et al. 2008</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">López-Fernández et al. 2010</xref>). <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily">Cichlinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is divided into seven tribes: <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe">Cichlini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe">Retroculini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe">Astronotini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe">Chaetobranchini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe">Geophagini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe">Cichlasomatini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="tribe">Heroini</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>; the last three being the most diverse ones (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">Smith et al. 2008</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">López-Fernández et al. 2010</xref>). However, despite the great fish species richness, especially in the tropics, little is known about the diversity and richness of the parasite fauna from these potential hosts (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avise et al. 2008</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Tavares-Dias et al. (2022)</xref> estimated that only 6% of monopisthocotylan richness is known, incipient knowledge given the richness of fish species that exists, and that each host species hosts at least two monopisthocotylan species.</p>
<p>The proportion of cichlid species worldwide examined for the presence of Monopishtocotyla is low, and the diversity of these helminths parasitizing cichlid fishes in the Neotropical Region remains understudied compared to their counterparts in Africa. However, this imbalance is more likely due to differences in sampling efforts rather than actual variations in species richness among genera (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Pariselle et al. 2011</xref>).</p>

<p>The Munim River Basin is mainly located at the Cerrado Biome of the Maranhão State; however, its lower portion is located in a region between the Cerrado and Amazon biomes, and its mouth is at the Bay of São José, in a region known as the “Golfão Maranhense” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Vieira et al. 2023</xref>). A recent fish inventory, conducted by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Vieira et al. Upon re-examining the holotype and paratypes, the cap was observed by the authors of this study.</p>
